Collection of works by Saou Watanabe, edited by Hokaku Suzuki, Calligraphy, Includes shipping, First calligraphy of the year.

[Calligraphy] "Collection of Works by Saou Watanabe" Edited by: Hokaku Suzuki, Published by: Mokujisha, 85 works, Seal impressions, Explanations, etc., 236 pages, 1976, With box

Saou Watanabe was a calligrapher of the Meiji era. While working for Nippon Yusen, he was mentored by Kakukaku Kusakabe and Gotaku Nakamura, and was called "one of the Four Heavenly Kings of the Tsurumon," and was also strongly influenced by Gotaku's calligraphy theory. He explored Chinese stone inscriptions and classics, establishing his own high-class calligraphy style.
This collection of works includes 85 pieces and a letter to Tenrai Hidai (Ko), as well as seal impressions and explanations. In addition, Hokaku Suzuki's research on Saou is included at the end of the book.
Saou passed away at the age of 52, and his disciple Fusen Ohashi also passed away at the age of 50. There was also a conflict with Kakukaku Kusakabe, and his calligraphy work was not widely appreciated, and not a single collection of his works had been published.
Hokaku Suzuki (who was mentored by Kishu Asami and later studied under Shukaku Tashiro), a calligrapher who was impressed by Saou's works and admired him, lamented this and compiled the works of Saou Watanabe, which were on the verge of being scattered, into this collection.
The work on the box and cover is an article from "Rakushi-ron" written by the Han Dynasty scholar Chochoto, which describes the ideal lifestyle of a scholar in a very attractive way. It was one of Saou's favorite writings, and the work is also included in photo 5.
