Special Exhibition of Reiwa 1st Year: "The Land of Royal Authority, Sakurai"

Sakurai City, located in the southeastern part of the Nara Basin, has yielded numerous remains and artifacts from various periods, from the Jomon period to modern times, and much still remains buried. In particular, regarding the early Kofun period (3rd-4th centuries), there are the Makimuku Kofun Cluster, including the Makimuku Ishizuka Kofun, Katsuyama Kofun, and Yazuka Kofun, known as the early Kofun, as well as large early Kofun such as the Hashihaka Kofun, Sakurai Chausuyama Kofun, and Mesuriyama Kofun. There is also the Makimuku site, where earthenware from all over Japan and the largest pit-dwelling building from the 3rd century were found. These kofun and pit-dwelling buildings are considered to represent royal authority, and Sakurai is believed to be the place where the Yamato royal court was established.

Furthermore, the city has the remains of the palaces of 12 emperors, from Emperor Sujin (10th) at Isokinomizugaki Palace to Emperor Sushun (32nd) at Kurahashi Palace, indicating a long-standing connection with the emperors. In particular, the Hase no Asakura Palace of Emperor Yuryaku (21st) has revealed pit-dwelling buildings and ditch-like remains from the 5th century in the excavation of the Wakimoto site near the legendary site. These are considered to be facilities related to the Asakura Palace, and are attracting attention as indicating the location of the palace site. This special exhibition is a joint project between our association and the Nara Prefectural Kashihara Archaeological Institute Museum. The exhibition will display not only artifacts owned by Sakurai City, but also artifacts owned by the museum and the research institute, and we hope that you will learn about "The Land of Royal Authority, Sakurai" from the remains and excavated artifacts of the Makimuku site, Sakurai Chausuyama Kofun, Wakimoto site, and others.
