Gate of Hell (1953) is a Japanese jidaigeki drama directed by Teinosuke Kinugasa and starring Kazuo Hasegawa, Machiko Kyō and Isao Yamagata. Set during the Heiji Rebellion in 12th-century Japan, the film follows samurai Moritō Enda, who falls in love with Lady Kesa after rescuing her during a palace uprising. Upon learning she is married, Moritō's obsession leads to tragic consequences. Notable for its vibrant Eastmancolor cinematography, it was the first Japanese color film released internationally and won the Palme d'Or at Cannes and two Academy Awards, including Best Foreign Language Film.
