The image shows a medal related to the 1904 Olympics in St. Louis. This was the first time the Olympic Games were held outside of Europe, and the first time gold, silver, and bronze medals were awarded for first, second, and third places respectively.
The front of the medal features a victorious athlete holding a wreath, with the inscription "Olympiad, 1904". The reverse side depicts Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, alongside Zeus, the king of the gods, and the words "Universal Exposition St. Louis U.S.A".
One such gold medal from the 1904 St. Louis Olympics was awarded to American Fred Schule, who won the 110-meter hurdles. This medal, including its original ribbon and leather case, was recently put up for auction.
The St. Louis Games were part of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, a large fair celebrating the 100th anniversary of the U.S. acquisition of the Louisiana Territory.
